I have this little thing for National Observation Days. So does my pal, Ollie Bug.Sometimes they’re cute and funny. Sometimes they raise awareness for good causes and social issues.
Sometimes they make me aware of days when it’s permissible to eat as much chocolate as I can get my hands on.
Yesterday was National Bat Appreciation Day. You may think bats are creepy vermin in which case you’d be wrong.
Bats are vital players in the fragile ecosystem we call home.
Without going too deep into it we are threatening their existence with our encroachment into their habitats and our general ignorance of just what it is bats actually do. For one thing they eat all the bugs that qualify as icky and creepy like mosquitoes. Good enough for me.
I happen to find them adorable.
Speaking of which, I asked my sidekick, Ollie how he’d like to celebrate National Bat Appreciation Day. I was hoping he’d want to dress up as Dracula and scare the pants off all his little friends. Nope. He went the other route and I had to listen to him walk around all day with the Bat Voice. You know exactly what I’m talking about. I had to endure a little spider in cape, cowl and utility belt repeating over and over, “I’m Batbug”, “Gimme a cookie” and “We’re outta hot chocolate”! all day.
